Turtleback Falls
Please note, with the upgrades to Gorges State Park, the trail to Rainbow Falls described below has been rerouted. It is not longer accessible from Hwy. 281. The guide will be updated soon.
Turtleback Falls is not for the faint of heart. The area is beautiful and has a great swimming hole, provided the water is not running high. Adventurous swimmers even slide down the fall, but do so at your own risk (that means we don’t recommend it).
From Cashiers, travel down Hwy. 64 East to Hwy. 281 South. Travel approximately one mile to Gorges State Park, and park in the lot here. Walk back to the highway and follow the path around and into the woods. The Horsepasture River is about one-half mile down the trail. Turn left on the trail, and Turtleback is just ahead.
Not to be repetitive, but BE CAREFUL. The rocks here can be especially slippery, and do not attempt to swim here when the water is high because currents could sweep you downriver to the 150’ Rainbow Falls.
Also, be careful if you slide down the fall. It is not recommended, but people do slide here and do not hurt themselves. But others have.
There are some great rocks for sunning yourself and lots of room for swimming. This is really one of the most beautiful places in the area.
